Cistercian Hospitality
The Rule of Saint Benedict, which is a foundational document for the Cistercian Order as well, places great emphasis on hospitality. It devotes an entire, lengthy chapter to the reception of guests. According to the Rule, the brothers are to see Christ Himself in arriving guests, for He said: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” For this reason, here at the monastery in Vyšší Brod, we have converted a former farm building into a pilgrim house, which we have entrusted under the protection of the Holy Family. We want the pilgrim house to become a place where people can find rest for both body and soul, and where they can draw strength for their journey through life. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, who says: “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation,” Vyšší Brod Monastery wishes to be an oasis in a world that is always rushing yet does not know where it is going; a world where money too often comes first, and where artificial intelligence is overwhelming common sense.
Accommodation and Facilities

The pilgrim house, with a capacity of 110 beds, is open to individuals and families as well as organised groups. It offers accommodation primarily for spiritual and recreational stays — for all those who wish to enter into silence, attend Holy Mass, join in the prayers of the brothers or take part in specific spiritual exercises, and rest in body and soul in the setting of the monastery and the picturesque foothills of the Šumava Mountains. Rooms are available with either shared or private bathrooms. The pilgrim house also has its own chapel, lecture hall and dining room.
Prices and Availability
We want the pilgrim house to be financially accessible to all who have a genuine interest in staying at our monastery. We therefore offer discounts for clergy and consecrated persons, students and large families. Should the prices still be beyond your means, please let us know. We are also grateful for every donation above the stated prices, as this helps others.
“Come, all you who thirst, come to the waters and draw water from the wells of salvation” — in Vyšší Brod.
